Membership categories

  • Licensed to sell life insurance and provide services related to life insurance, wealth management or employee benefits directly to clients for at least the past 5 years (3 years with a CLU or comparable designation*).

  • Over the past two years, an average of at least $425,000 in gross income or $300,000 in net income OR over the past four years, an average of at least $335,000 gross income or $235,000 in net income.

  • Recommendations from two CALU Members and a third from either a CALU Member, a Provisional Member or an Associate with supporting commentary that clearly indicates the applicant’s practice in one or more fields of advanced life underwriting.

  • Demonstrate a commitment to advancing th objectives of CALU through civic and political involvement.

  • Be a member in good standing of Advocis – CALU’s strategic partner.

  • Be approved by the Board upon recommendation by the Membership Committee.

  • Submit your application here.

  • Licensed to sell life insurance and provide services related to life insurance, wealth management or employee benefits directly to clients for at least the past 3 years.

  • At least 50%, and less than 100%, of the Member income requirement. Over the past two years, an average of at least $212,500 in gross income or $150,000 in net income OR over the past four years, an average of at least $167,500 gross income or $117,500 in net income.

  • Recommendations from two CALU Members and a third from either a CALU Member, a Provisional Member or an Associate with supporting commentary that clearly indicates the applicant’s practice in one or more fields of advanced life underwriting.

  • Demonstrate a commitment to advancing the objectives of CALU through civic and political involvement.

  • Be a member in good standing of Advocis – CALU’s strategic partner.

  • Be approved by the Board upon recommendation by the Membership Committee.

  • Submit your application here.

  • Actively engaged in employment, business or a profession which is substantially related to advanced life underwriting in a role supporting the industry or advisor(s).

  • Letters of recommendation from one CALU Member and a second from either a CALU Member, a Provisional Member or an Associate with supporting commentary that clearly indicates the applicant’s practice in one or more fields of advanced life underwriting.

  • Be approved by the Board upon recommendation by the Membership Committee.

  • Submit your application here.

  • Not licensed to sell life insurance.
  • CALU Member for at least five years.
  • Be a Retired Member in good standing of Advocis – CALU’s strategic partner.
  • Submit your application here.

Retiree membership provides the same membership benefits as the Member category except serving on committees, and the right to speak and vote at the Annual Meeting of Members.

“Advanced life underwriting” shall include advisory and marketing activities relating to estate planning, corporate-owned and business life insurance, statutory and non-statutory pension arrangements, employee benefits, retirement planning, wealth creation and management, practice management and such other areas of activity of persons engaged in the business of life insurance as the Board of Directors may identify and define from time to time.

CLU – Chartered Life Underwriter (offered through The Institute for Advanced Financial Education (The Institute), as well as through la Chambre in QC)

CHS – Certified Health Insurance Specialist (the only health-insurance focused designation in Canada; replaced the RHU – Registered Health Underwriter starting back in late 2011)

CH.F.C. – Chartered Financial Consultant (formerly offered through the Institute; there is a U.S. version ChFC)

PFA – Professional Financial Advisor (the new designation offered by The Institute / Advocis)

CFP – Certified Financial Planner (offered through the Financial Planner Board of Standards and the Financial Planning Standards Council, soon to be rebranded as FP Canada)

CFA – Chartered Financial Analyst (offered by the CFA Institute)

CIM – Chartered Investment Manager (previously Canadian Investment Manager; the designation is a professional certification conferred by Canadian Securities Institute)

CPA – Chartered Professional Accountant

FEA – Family Enterprise Advisor (offered through the Family Enterprise Xchange)

JD – Juris Doctor

LL.B. – Bachelor of Laws

LL.M. – Master of Laws

PFP – Personal Financial Planner (offered by the Canadian Securities Institute)

TEP – Trust and Estate Practitioner (offered through Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners – STEP)

Pl. Fin. / P. Fl. – Planificateur financier / Financial planner (offered by l’Institut Québécois de planification financière – IQPF)

CALU will rely on Advocis and The Institute to assess other designations.
