Continuing Education (CE) accreditation at CALU

CALU supports the professional development and licensing requirements of its members by offering Continuing Education (CE) certificates in the life insurance industry on behalf of nine jurisdictions and agencies across Canada. The jurisdictions include:

  • Alberta Insurance Council
  • Chambre de la sécurité financière (CSF)
  • Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario (FSRA)
  • FP Canada
  • Insurance Council of British Columbia
  • Insurance Council of Manitoba
  • Insurance Council of Saskatchewan
  • Institute for Advanced Financial Education (IAFE/Advocis)
  • Mutual Fund Dealers Association of Canada (MFDA)

For all of our events, we strive to provide Intermediate to Advanced level education on topics that are relevant to our members’ work and that meets the CE requirements for each governing body. CE certificates are issued per workshop or presentation to those members who are in full attendance for the session.

Our members can then use their CE certificates, which are available for download in the Members Portal, towards their CE credit requirements for renewal of their provincial licenses and their designations.

CE certificates are also available for recorded content from past events that is available for on-demand viewing. View the list of past events for more information.

For any questions about CE certificates, please contact us at calu@calu.com.

Please note that the availability of CE credits and the quantity of CE credits to be allocated for each event is subject to course approval by the governing bodies.

CALU CE Policy

Continuing education (CE) certificates for approved sessions are granted to participants who have attended the full duration of each session and whose attendance can be verified (either by scanning in and out or signing attendance sheets, depending on the event). This is an audit requirement imposed by the agencies who provide accreditation.

Duration of attendance

The agencies that CALU receives accreditation from mandate specific attendance requirements for participants to qualify for certificates. Examples of attendance requirements are:

  • The Chambre de l’assurance states on page 21 of their best practices manual that “[the learner] may be absent for a total of 5 minutes, no matter the length of the CE activity.”
  • The Insurance Council of Manitoba states that “All courses […] must have a verifiable method of confirming attendance or completion […] for the entire presentation.”
  • The Insurance Council of Saskatchewan indicates that “To receive credit for the purposes of continuing education, the licensee must successfully complete the course.”
  • FP Canada indicates that “participants are required to attend the full duration of a CE activity that is offered on-line or in person”.
  • MFDA requests that “The Provider should also consider, where the Participant has been absent for a period of time during the CE activity, if the amount of time that the person has spent at the CE activity is adequate. For example, a Participant that misses more than 10% of an in person event or webinar may not have attained enough knowledge to be recognized for their attendance.”
Penalties

Only participants who have attended the full educational activity/session will be awarded CE certificates/credits. Audits that show certificates awarded to participants who did not attend the full educational activity/session puts the participant’s credits – and CALU’s ability to obtain accreditation – at risk.

Partial credits

As attendance for the full education activity/session is a requirement imposed by the governing bodies/agencies partial credit will not be issued. Therefore, participants whose record shows them in attendance for less than the full activity/session will not be awarded partial credit.

Participants are responsible for ensuring that they have either been scanned in and out, or signed the attendance sheets, depending on the event. Participants can check with the CALU team at any time during an event to confirm their attendance. Changes will not be made after an event.

CALU uses Pheedloop to track attendance at the annual Conference & AGM. To check in and out of sessions the QR code on participants’ badges must be scanned by a member of CALU team. Badges must be scanned at the beginning of a session to check in the participant as participants who are not checked in cannot be checked out. As a result, no check in record will result in no attendance record.

Where Pheedloop is not used attendance sheets will be provided. Participants are responsible for ensuring that they sign all sheets with their time in and out.

CALU does not control when the governing bodies/agencies issue CE certificates. Every effort is made to issue the certificates as soon as the approvals are received. Each event includes a CE tracking chart on the CALU website in Past Events that outlines what certificates have been issued for the event. The chart is updated as certificates are approved.

CE certificates can be found in the Member Portal (for both members and guests). Certificates are dynamic and regularly updated to show new certificate numbers as they are received. If your certificate does not show the credits listed on the CE tracking chart you will need to download a new copy of the certificate from your Member Portal.

All Continuing Education (CE) inquiries should be directed to CALU at calu@calu.com.
